Enterprising Chisago County deputy nabs burglar
By Patrick Tepoorten
The case of a Chisago County burglar who entered homes during the daytime and stole primarily loose change has been solved by Chisago County deputy Ryan Edmonds.
ěGarice (Carlson) kind of handed the case over to Ryan to see if he could take care of it,î at Edmonds request, said Chisago County Sheriff Todd Rivard. Just over a week later, the case is solved.
The burglaries took place on Oct. 9, 11, and 23, and, in one case, the thief stole a five-gallon jug typically associated with water coolers, full of yearsí worth of loose change amounting to roughly $900.
Edmonds asked around local banks to determine if any tellers remembered someone bringing in such a jug, and indeed, one teller did.
A picture was able to be produced from bank security cameras and Edmonds then took the picture around to local schools to see if anyone recognized the young burglar.
That plan resulted in the identification of Matthew Ryan Olson, 18, of Stacy. As luck would have it, Edmonds then discovered Olson driving around in his car and proceeded with a traffic stop.
Olson confessed to all three of the daytime robberies, as well as another in Isanti County.
Olson has been charged with three counts of third degree burglary and awaits charges in the Isanti County burglary as well.
