RC sends two to state meet

Laura Hestbeck and Josh Dahl are headed to state.

Rush Cityís Josh Dahl and Laura Hestbeck, both All-Conference runners, qualified for the state cross country meet at the section meet in Cloquet Oct. 26.

Dahl, in his sixth year with the Rush City cross country program, placed ninth with a time of 17:33

ìJosh ran a very smart race. He put himself in the top of the pack and kept his pace over the last mile when the race is usually decided,î head coach Kevin Smith said.

Dahl narrowly missed the state meet the last two seasons, placing 13th and 15th. The top ten individuals qualify for state.

Smith said this is the first time in 12 years a boy cross country runner has qualified for state.

Hestbeck finished 7th overall with a time of 16:29.

ìShe pushed her pace and moved up some and had a good kick in the end,î Smith said.

ì... we are real glad to have a boy and girl represent Rush City this year at the state meet,î Smith said.

Amber Hoffman ran her last high school cross country race. Like Dahl, she has been with the program since seventh grade.

The top three girl runners ran their fast times of the year, trimming their mile pace substantially, Smith said.

Switching gears to the team, the boys finished 10th out of 17 teams in the section with 256 points. The girls placed seventh in the section with 206 points.

Not a bad way to end the season, considering both teams barely had enough runners to complete a roster at the beginning of the season.
