Baumann named player of week
Two Bulldogs who played an integral part in the University of Minnesota Duluthís 29-24 season-ending victory over St. Cloud State University Saturday ñ Ted Schlafke and Britt Baumann ñ have received North Central Conference Players of the Week recognition for their spirited performances.
This marks the second time this year the pair have been so honored.
Baumann, a 5-10, 170-pound junior placekicker from North Branch, Minn., matched a career-high by booting three field goals (from 35, 32 and 21 yards) in three tries and added two extra points en route to landing the NCC Special Teams Player of the Week award (he shared that honor with University of North Dakotaís Brandon Hellevang). The three field goals gave Baumann a personal best eight three-pointers on the year while the two extra point kicks extended his school record PAT streak to 54.
Schlafke, a 5-11, 185-pound sophomore quarterback., was chosen the leagueís co-Offensive Player of the Week honor after connecting on 31 of 51 passes for 301 yards and one touchdown. The Stevens Point, Wis., native also rushed for a game-high 77 yards on 19 carries and engineered the Bulldogsí game-winning 12-play, 75-yard scoring drive late in the fourth quarter.
UMD closed out the 2006 season with a 6-4 overall record and placed fourth in the NCC standings at 4-4.
