Conrad called to active duty

John Conrad expects to leave on what could be an 18-month deployment in November.

John Conrad, 25, who has been a North Branch Police Officer for just about a year, has been called off of the ready reserve of the U.S. Army. He will once again be a deployed active duty Army military police (MP) officer beginning in November.

Conrad is not sure yet where he will serve in the war on terror. He could be deployed to either Iraq or Afghanistan, or he could be deployed stateside as a fill-in for another soldier deployed overseas. He is also not sure for how long he will be deployed, but believes it will be for an 18-month period or less. Regardless, Conrad is already looking forward to getting home.

ìWhen I get back Iíll probably get married (to fiance Brittany Bey) and get back on the job,î he said.

Serving his country as an MP will certainly not be a new experience for Conrad. In the past he served as an MP at Fort Monroe in Virginia, a member of the Special Reaction Team (SRT), and as a squad leader for the 501st Military Intelligence Brigade.

Joining the military in the first place was not a hard decision for Conrad, who explained that he ìalways wanted to serve his country,î and also knew it would assist in his desire to be a law enforcement officer.

Conrad will miss all the fun he enjoys in the great outdoors, including motocross, riding ATVs, snowboarding and snowmobiling, as well as working on muscle cars. On the other hand, he will be returning to civilian life just in time for the release of the 2008 Chevrolet Camaro, which he assured will blow the doors off of the new Mustang.

Police Chief Steve Forner said it will be hard to see Conrad go because he has caught on so well in the department. ìJohn really knows his stuff,î he said. ìI hope he decides to come back.î
