Research transportation bill
TO THE EDITOR:
İI am amazed at how many yard signs there are in our areaİsupporting the purposed transportation bill. Iím wondering if the people really understand the bill or are just for it because their political parties (both) are recommending it. The bill passed the House with only 29 democrats and 2 republicans voting against.
This new Constitution Amendment dedicates all revenue from vehicles to go to transportation. Currently, somewhere around 50 percent to 55 percent (this figure varies depending on who you get it from)İgoes to transportation and the balance goes in the general fund.
Thereİare two majorİproblems with the bill:
1. The bill states that not more than 60 percent (only slightly more than currentİ)İis dedicated to roads.İİThe remaining 40 percent is dedicated to public transit assistance. Why would anyone in rural Minnesotaİwant to guarantee theİpoliticians funding for more light rail in theİİTwin Cities?İİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ
2. The 40 percent dedicated to public transit (light rail) is currently going into the general fund. The only way that this can be replaced is to increase taxes.
I urge all of the voters to research this bill and the motive behind it prior to voting. Its passage will not greatly improve our roads; will decrease the general fund resulting in a tax increase; and will allow guaranteed funds for light rail.İ
