Rush City man threatened, shot during kidnapping
By Patrick Tepoorten
More details are emerging now about a kidnapping involving numerous Rush City men that was first reported on the Post Review Web site last Friday. At that time it was believed that four individuals were involved in kidnapping and shooting Anthony Inscore, 24, of Rush City. Now the list of suspects could potentially expand to five people.
The string of crimes began very early Tuesday morning when Inscore was taken from a Cambridge residence by James D. Newburgh, 28, of Rush City, Kurt Erickson, 39, of Stanchfield, and John Eckman, 27, of North Branch.
On the way to Ericksonís residence, Eckman is believed to have broken Inscoreís nose using a set of nunchucks.
Once at Ericksonís, Inscore was allegedly threatened with physical violence if he did not return a gun the suspects believed he had possession of and helped the suspects rob a friend of Inscoreís.
Among other threats, Inscore was threatened with having his toes or fingers shot off with one of the guns being held on him by the suspects.
Ultimately Inscore did tell the suspects where the gun was and at least one of the suspects, Delbert K. Sybrandt, 49, of Rush City, went to retrieve it. Inscore also agreed to assist in the robbery.
While Sybrandt was retrieving the gun, it is believed that Inscore spent time outside the residence, perhaps in Newburghís parked car, along with Newburgh. According to investigators though, he was not allowed to leave and may have been negotiating to save his own life at that time.
After Sybrandt returned and entered the house, Inscore and Newburgh followed suit. Sybrandt shot Inscore as he entered the house, using a .22 caliber rifle loaded with pellets commonly referred to as birdshot.
After he was shot, Inscore was allowed to leave on foot. He was later picked up by Newburgh, who drove Inscore to a friendís house in Cambridge. Inscoreís friend, whose name is being withheld, then transferred Inscore to another location for his safety.
Inscoreís phoned the Sheriffís Office on Wednesday afternoon when he realized he would have to be treated at the hospital for his wounds.
Sybrandt and Newburgh have been arrested and charged with kidnapping, aggravated robbery, first degree assault, and fifth degree possession of methamphetamine. Erickson was also arrested for possession of methamphetamine.
Eckman remains at large.ìItís a matter of figuring out where he is hanging his hat,î said investigator Garice Carlson on Tuesday.
