Tigers fight off first quarter mistakes for win
![]() In the beginning it was all about defense for the Tigers. Down 14-0 early, it became important to limit the damage Aitkin was doing with its offense. Cole Karnick played a key role in that, keeping Aitkin quarterback Connor Butenhoff from exploiting the edges. |

The Tiger football team was tested for the first time this season, being down 14-0 early in the first quarter against Aitkin Oct. 6.
But the 11 seniors fought back from the lackluster first half and won by one point in the final quarter to continue their story book season.
Senior Jake Bosman ran in a one-yard touchdown late in the first half, but the Tigers still trailed by a touchdown.
ìThe first half we came out flat,î head coach Gary Wendorf said. ìBut we took over in the second half.î
The game was decided in the last six minutes of the game. Bosman connected with Jeff Jennings for a touchdown to make the score 20-21 with six minutes left in the game.
Rush City was in extra-point formation and prepared to go for one. However, Wendorf gave his senior quarterback the final decision on whether or not to go for two points. Like a veteran NFL quarterback, Bosman read the defense and noticed Aitkin was ready to attack the line with gusto. Picking up paramount defensive cue, Bosman called to Jennings, his go-to wide receiver, to roll out for a pass. Everyone held their blocks and seconds later Bosman found Jennings in the back of the end zone all alone.
Game over.
The close win was good for the kids, Wendorf said.
ìThey found out they could really come from behind and win.î
On the offensive side of things the Tigers, once again, had a balanced running attack. Four running backs averaged 62 yards running for the game.
Senior James Fleming lead the team with 14 carries for 99 yards.
ìFleming really ran the ball hard,î Wendorf said.
Up next, the Tigers travel to Braham on Friday, Oct. 14 which may be the most significant game of the regular season for the Tigers. Both teams are undefeated and the conference title is up for grabs at kick-off time Friday night.
ìThey have a good time,î Wendorf said. ìItís going to be a good challenge ... weíre going to have an all out effort.î
