Pine Tech. and Sunrise Fiberglass receive state grant

Pine Technical College (PTC) and Sunrise Fiberglass Corporation (SFC) will be working together on a $145,000 two-phased project partially funded by a grant from the Minnesota Job Skills Partnership.

Phase one is geared toward educating employees of SFC to understand and become aware of the impact each individual decision or step in the manufacturing process might have on the bottom-line. Phase two provides for Certified Composites Technician (CCT) training, endorsed by the American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA), to all Sunrise Fiberglass staff by Pine Technical College.

According to the ACMA, CCT training focuses on the fundamental technology used in producing a wide range of products. These program-specific certifications place emphasis on the knowledge and technical skills required in production. The CCT program is designed to elevate standards in the industry, enhance individual performance, and recognize those who demonstrate a prescribed level of knowledge in a specific specialization.

As of this date, ACMA is not situated to offer CCT training in Minnesota. However, as a result of this grant, PTC will gain the capacity to become an authorized CCT training site with a certified instructor and Sunrise Fiberglass Corporation will also gain an on-staff certified instructor who will serve as a mentor to employees and will train future hires. Dennis Berry, of SFC, said, ìWe look forward to collaborating on this project with Pine Technical College. This is an exciting opportunity for Sunrise Fiberglass. This project will help our employees understand the challenges of our company and it will help Sunrise make progressive changes toward keeping our competitive edge.î

John Rieck, also of SFC, added, ìWith the help of the Pine Technical College training program, our staff will hold one of the highest standards in the composite industry. I believe this kind of reciprocal education will create a positive response in the knowledge of our staff, the cohesions of Sunrise Fiberglassís employees, and the industry in this region.î

Jason Spaeth, Dean of Customized Training and Continuing Education at PTC, said, ìBecause of the possibilities presented through this grant, we become the only college in the state able to provide CCT training and we are very excited to hold that designation. Pine Technical College becomes the resource to companies, like Sunrise, throughout the state of Minnesota.î
