Beware of phone solicitors
TO THE EDITOR:
Once again the North Branch Police Department is receiving calls from the public about phone solicitors who are calling to support local police and sheriffs departments.
These telemarketers are hired by organizations to solicit for them.
They also work on a commission as high as 80 percent. This translates on a $10 donation, to $8 going to the telemarketers, as administrative costs.
In most cases law enforcement does not see any of these funds, nor receive any benefits from the donation.
The telemarketers will use the common phrase, ìYou do want to support your police, donít you?î as a common selling phrase.
My suggestion is, if you feel you need to donate, contact the organization directly.
There are several organizations that need and survive on donations, and will let you know the percentage of the donation that goes to administrative costs. And your donation can stay local if desired.
If you need further information, or assistance, feel free to contact the North Branch Police Department at 651-674-8848.
