TO THE EDITOR:

Nessel Township residents this election year at the ballot box will have the opportunity to eliminate enough services to save each property owner $5 to $10 dollars. Of course if we do we will have to put up with a reduction and probably timely completion of projects and services. A citizensí committee recently submitted its recommendation to the board and to the public at a meeting Friday evening Aug. 25 to explain the reasons why and what money might be saved.

By eliminating all the employees, vehicles and equipment the dollars saved looked fantastic. But when you start adding back in the services required to meet our needs the savings kept getting smaller and smaller. Of course when the savings started getting too small they forgot about many of the things we take for granted, mowing of ditches, removal of unsightly garbage (tires, old refrigerators, etc.), frost boil repair in the spring, salting and sanding when slippery, minor road repairs in a timely fashion, clean up and repairing of storm damage and many other little chores unseen but necessary.

The committee did interview a few neighboring townships in both Isanti and here in Chisago County, to get positive comments and costs per hour to use as a basis of costs to the township.

Of course Nessel is maybe a little larger, has more roads, dead ends and intersections than the rest of them combined. As a member of the committee stated, one of the main reasons they got together was not to look at the savings but to do something the board was reluctant to do ìif the board would have done in March what it took care of at the August meeting there would have been no reason to have this committeeî referring to the dismissal of the senior employee.

So when you read between the lines we have a small group of disgruntled residents with seemingly no purpose in life except to stir up unwarranted gossip and unsubstantiated rumors. Of course it does make good reading in the editorial sections and provides the rest of the county and surrounding area a good laugh.
