At last Thursday's regular meeting of the North Branch School Board, the hiring of superintendent Deb Henton (pictured) was approved and the contract negotiation begun.
Henton is a 22-year resident of Stillwater Twsp., and she says that living in a rural environment, where development and community character are important issues, makes her a good fit here.
In getting to know the district through the interview process, Henton has become more and more impressed with what she has seen. "The people I met were of the highest caliber. I'm excited to be working with people who enjoy working there," she said, and added that she is "very fortunate to be coming into an environment where student achievement is highly valued."
Henton has seen first hand issues faced by the district, and wants to continue insuring that students are "pushed to the edge of their potential." She also sees budget and growth issues as top priorities. "We have to maintain attractive programs," she said, but acknowledged that the district must pay close attention to local demographics.
And, although she doesn't have a problem hoping for future economic growth locally, Henton says the district must "plan as if this is the resource base we have."
