Osceola bridge passes inspection
On Aug. 3, Mn/DOT District 6 bridge inspectors Eric Evens and Gary Waletzki inspected the superstructure of bridge BR6347, which spans the St. Croix River from Franconia Township to Osceola, Wisc. Access for inspection was achieved by utilizing a 30-foot "snooper."
No critical findings were discovered during the inspection. The inspection findings detailed in the April 2006 fracture critical report prepared by the Metro District Inspection Team were verified to the same by this inspection.
Tension diagonals L12/U13 and L24/U23 on both the north and south truss have a drain support angle iron welded to the member. These welds are transverse to the primary direction of stress.
No cracks were found in the welds or base metal on any of these diagonals.
Any additional findings discovered during the inspection were of minor significance.
Evens said, "I would categorize the NBI rating of the superstructure as a 7 ‘good condition.' The paint system on this bridge is in very good condition considering it was repainted in 1985. Measurements of the movable (rocker) bearings were taken at 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The bearings appear to be functioning as designed."

I happened to be canoeing on the St Croix River the day this bridge was inspected. For a significant amount of time I witnessed the process of the inspection. The two inspectors never took off their sunglasses while inspecting under the bridge...
Makes you wonder!
