A Selfless man, A Legacy of giving to others...

Gerald Wendell Fairbanks passed from this life on December 12, 2007. His warm smile, quiet confidence, he truly cared for everyone. Jerry was a farmer, family man, father and friend and was generous to a fault.

A lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church of North Branch, Minn. Graduate and athlete at North Branch High School Jerry served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. There he served with courage and valor in some of that war's most horrible battles (Pork Chop Hill). For decades he received a Holiday phone call from his unit's Medic, who's life he saved by carrying him to an aid station behind the front. We only knew of this selfless act by being present at these emotional calls.

He farmed his entire life, many of them with his father Edson.

He worked for 38 years for the Minnesota Department of Transportation and was an active bowler on many teams with his brothers. A 50 year + member of North Branch American Legion Post #85 and also a member of North Branch VFW Post #6424. He served in many offices including Commander of both organizations.

He is survived by his wife Delores, brothers Gene (Shirley), Melvin (Jean), Dale (Sharon), Delmer (Jean), Jim (Pat), sisters Joyce Beecher (Orman), Janice Nelson (Jerome) and sister-in-law, Walene Fairbanks. Stepchildren Troy Cheeney, Brad Cheeney, Amy Schallys, Linda Cheeney, Jim Mayne, Jane Fisk, Joe Mayne, Jerome Mayne and Jacob Mayne. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his first wife Charlotte, brother Kenneth, stepsons Mark Cheeney, Jeffrey and John Mayne.

Visitation at Grandstrand Funeral Home, North Branch on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007 from 3 to 7 p.m.

His funeral will be at Trinity Lutheran Church at 38460 Lincoln Trail, North Branch, Minn. on Monday, Dec. 17, 2007 at 11 a.m., visitation one hour prior at church.
