Viking wrestling team takes down St. Francis at home
By Steve Morris
The North Branch wrestling program is slowly emerging as a team to reckon with in the North Suburban Conference.
Last week, the boys defeated the state-ranked St. Francis Fighting Saints 34-28 at home to earn their second NSC win of the season.
Tied at 28 going into the last match of the night, North Branch heavy weight John Morrison won by fall to push the Vikings over the edge and into the win column.
Head coach Tony Aho acknowledged how much the win means for the team.
"St. Francis has a very good tradition in wrestling and are the perennial favorite in the North Suburban Conference, so this was a nice win for our team. This win came as much from kids who lost, as those who won their matches," Aho said.
Jake Kalkbrenner and Matt Lutgen stayed off their backs against good opponents.
"Zach Frink and Tom Mork looked very sharp at 119 and 171. Matt Newham is down a weight and looks to be gaining some of what we saw from him at the end of last season," Aho said.
