Rush City/Pine City team wins fourth straight game
January 30 brought the North Branch Vikings face to face against the Pine City/Rush City boys hockey game. It was the final meeting of the year between the two teams.
Scoring in the first period was senior Dan Carlson with a backhand at the net with the assists going to senior line mates Travis Tacheny and Neal Schumacher. Seconds later, forward Tyler Will scored with a tip at the net. The period ended with Carlson scoring from Schumacher with 30 seconds left.
Second period action started at 9:52. Carlson passed the puck to Tacheny, from the blue line, who was able to put one in on the Viking net minder. Within nine seconds, sophomore defensemen Haakan Hansen got the puck at the top of the circle off of the draw and got it across to junior forward Terry Kraft who was waiting bedside the net and put it in. With 7:01 on the clock, Tacheny stole the puck at the blue line and went in unassisted to bring the score to 6 - 0.
With :35.7 remaining in the second senior, defensemen Paul Lord got the draw back to Kraft who put his shot on net. As the puck was slipping under the goalie's pad senior forward Corbin Peters was there to tip the puck past the goal line. PCRC went into intermission with a 7-0 lead.
Lighting the board early in the third was sophomore forward Colton Warner. Kraft made a pass through the crease and Warner was able to redirect the pass into the net. At the 12:34 mark Tacheny scored with the assists going to Carlson and Schumacher to close out the game with a 9-0 victory.
Tacheny tallied a hat trick, Schumacher and junior goalie Travis Peterson recorded a shut out. The Dragons out shot the Vikings 38-16.
Of Feb. 1, the Dragons traveled to Siren for a rematch with the Brunette Blizzard. The Dragon's scored first with 2:59 remaining in the first. Kraft put in a upper shelf shot when Peters got a pass from senior Brad Peterson.
Second period action started with the Blizzard scoring shorthanded at 14:01. Taking advantage of a power play, senior Tacheny got the puck out of the corner to the blue line to Carlson who put a low wrist shot past the goalie to regain the lead. The Blizzard again tied the game at 5:50.
At 7:12 in the third Tacheny got the puck behind the net and put the puck through the crease. Schumacher was able to put the pass in the net to take the lead. Lighting the board at 4:44, Carlson put the draw on Schumacher's stick who put a shot on net and Carlson was able to tip it in. With the Blizzard pulling their goalie in the final two minutes, the Dragons took the draw in their own zone. Carlson won the draw giving it to Schumacher at the bottom of the circle in the Dragon zone. Schumacher launched the pass into the blizzard zone and was able to score the open netter with :55.9 left in regulation. The Blizzard launched a late game resurgence scoring with just :00.1 left to end the game 5-3 for the locals. Shots were even for the game with PCRC at 29 and Brunette Blizzard 28.
On Feb. 3 the PCRC braved the below zero temperatures and traveled to Monticello, being guests to the Becker/Big Lake/Milaca Eagles.
The game opened with a flurry at the Eagle net with the Eagles scoring on themselves. Peters was awarded the tally being the closest Dragon to the puck at the time of the goal. At 8:51 the Eagles scored to tie the game. Within one minute senior Travis Tacheny passed the puck through the crease to line Schumacher who put a low wrist shot into the back of the net to regain the lead. BBLM again answered with a power play goal to tie the game. With 1:53 remaining in the first period senior center Dan Carlson took the draw and threw the puck back to the boards, going after the puck, Carlson was able to spin around with the shot and throw it past the Eagle net minder, who was screened by the defense.
Opening the second period was senior forward Brad Peterson, scoring on a wrist shot.
Peters was able to get a stick on it for the tally. At 9:01 Schumacher passed the puck to Tacheny's backhand from the top of the circle, and Tacheny put a low shot in under the pads to take a commanding 5-2 lead.
The game ended with BBLM making a resurgence and scoring twice, once on a three on five power play as the Dragons ran into penalty trouble, but the Dragons prevailed and held the 5-4 lead for the victory.
