The North Branch boys hockey team fell to the St. Francis Fighting Saints at their home arena in Chisago Lakes by a score of 2-9 on Jan. 11.
North Branch was able to score first, just a few minutes into the first period.
Senior forward Corey Husnik put in a rebound shot from junior forward Jack Williams. The goal was assisted by senior forward, J.T. Lindholm
After that, it was all St. Francis who piled on five unanswered goals in the first period.
Senior Levis Disrud said injuries have played a significant role for the Vikings this season. Summarizing the first period, Levi said it went all right but that the team could have played better.
"We just didn't come out with enough speed," Disrud said.
Disrud said once the team is at full health, things will improve.
Three minutes into the third period, sophomore forward Jake Lenards banged a one-timer by the St. Francis goalie to help the team get back in the game. Lenards heroics wasn't enough as St. Francis scored three goals in the third to end all scoring.
On Saturday, Jan. 13 North Branch surrendered to the Irondale Knights of New Brighton by a final score of 11-1.
Scoring the lone goal for the Vikings was junior blue liner Tyler Sowka who rocketed a shot past the Knight stopper shortly into the first period. It was all the goals the Vikings could muster.
Despite the conference loss, Disrud is optimistic about the playoffs.
"The hope I have is that we make it far into the playoffs," Disrud said.
