Some volunteers just don't quit
Outstanding seniors honored for work after 70

Since 1973, Chisago County has honored its senior citizens who just can't seem to quit volunteering their time and talents for the good of others. Known as the Outstanding Seniors Citizen award, 65 individuals have been so honored and last week the number was increased by two.
Viva Spiteri and Fran Reding are this year's winners.
The award is given to those who continue volunteering after age 70.
Spiteri, 79, a resident of Shield's Plaza in North Branch, is involved in TRIAD, volunteers at Aunt Bee's, and helps people at Shield's. Said her nominator, Vita checks on some people there every day to be sure they're OK, "She doesn't miss a day." And if anyone pulls the emergency cord, Viva is the first one there.
Spiteri is also a member of "Joyful Voices" a singing group which performs at nursing homes, senior centers, We "R" Able meetings and "various and sundry activities," according to her nominator.
Spiteri also saw to it that a lady who moved to Shield's with few possessions had the things she needed, from furniture to clothing.
Fran Reding, 72, of Rush City, is a devoted member of the honor guard with VFW Post 6692, and performs at funerals as needed. He helps out at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with communion at church or homes and is a reliable volunteer. He takes a friend meals, takes him shopping, which allowed the man to stay at home instead of going into a nursing home.
He helps out at the senior dining site as well where he assists those in wheelchairs, sets up and takes down tables and chairs, visits and befriends lonely people, and helps out with other tasks.
The nominators made it quite clear that both Viva and Fran make life easier for those around them. The two will be honored at the Minnesota State Fair and possibly bring home a state title.
