Surrounded by letters of congratulations from dignitaries, including such people as Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Sen. Norm Coleman, Sen. Rick Olseen, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, and even President George Bush, Rush City's Amy Carlson beams with pride.
Her accomplishment? Earning Girl Scout's highest award, the Gold Award.
Earning the award demonstrates accomplishments in leadership, community service, organization, career planning and personal development.
Carlson completed the required four interest project awards: the career exploration pin, the Senior Girl Scout Leadership Award, the Senior Girl Scout Challenge pin and a project that included at least 65 hours of work.
For her project, Carlson organized and directed the building of two softball field dugouts with the support of the Rush City School district, the Rush City Softball Association and various skilled labor volunteers from the community.
This was done in 2006.
The dugout project entailed a lot of planning and paperwork, Carlson noted. It began with an application and interview with the Girl Scout Council.
Carlson also organized a whiffle ball tournament for girls and held a food drive at the softball fields.
For their assistance, Carlson would like to thank Lake State Federal Credit Union for a $1,000 grant, Stock Lumber, Nick Malchow Construction, Rush City Softball Association, RC Activities Director Bob Schlagel, the Women's Club for a $200 donation and cookies, the Rush City Girl Scout Service unit and all the girls who brought food to the food drive.
Carlson, who will be a senior this fall at Rush City High School, has a personal career goal of becoming a physical therapist.
She is a member of the National Honor Society. During school she was in Knowledge Bowl, participated in the All-school play, did football stats, played basketball and softball (captain of both teams) and played the saxophone in the band. She enjoys playing softball and basketball in the summer, too, and is a lifeguard at the Rush City pool, where she also has begun teaching swimming lessons.
Carlson has been in Girl Scouts from the Daisy program on up. Her mother, a troop leader, figures her daughter has sold about 200 boxes of cookies each of 13 years.
Carlson is also in 4-H with her horse. She bought her horse and pays for its boarding with her own money.
Amy Carlson is the daughter of Bob and Karen Carlson.
