Becker PR's in shot put; finals elude Marty

Rush City Andrea Becker had a personal best at the state track meet in the shot put, but failed to advance to the finals in a field rich with upperclassman.
Becker, the only freshman competing in the Class A shot put, threw 33 feet and .25 inches at the state meet at Hamline on June 9.
Becker worked on her form all week in preparation for the state meet. The extra preparation paid with personal record. However, the new technique made her a little uncomfortable at first.
She said adding more height to her throw and doing the best she could were two things she was aiming for.
"I think I could have done a little better. I tried my best and that is all I can ask of myself."
Head coach Mike Vaughan said she puts a lot of pressure on herself to do good.
"I think she was a little nervous," Vaughan said.
Vaughan said Becker had two goals entering the state tournament: learn from the girls and try to make it to the finals.
Becker has a bright future ahead of her in track. She plays basketball and volleyball, which will help her develop into a stronger shot-putter.
"You want athletes to improve each meet and that is what Andrea has been doing all season," Vaughan said. "We're just proud that she is here and competing."
300 preliminaries
Senior Jeremy Marty ran in the 300 hurdles preliminaries at the state meet and missed qualifying for the finals. He finished with a time of 42.15.
Vaughan said he was with the pack for the first half of the race, but then had some miscues around hurdles six and seven, which cost him the race.
Andrew Daggett from Frazee won the 300 hurdles in a time of 38.87.

Marty was named to the academic all-state team. Marty has a Grade Point Average of 3.96.
