Parmly Senior Housing and Services receives Ecumen award
At the annual Ecumen Leadership Conference held recently in the Twin Cities, Parmly Senior Housing was recognized with its second "Seedling Award." These awards are given for new innovations that can be replicated throughout Ecumen.
The innovation called "The Dignity Quilt" is an integral part of their holistic end-of-life care program. The quilt focuses on celebrating death as a majestic part of our life's journey. It also signals to others that their care at the end of life will be compassionate and respectful.
The idea began with Jim McGurk, Parmly's grounds supervisor. He told Pastor Ron Gerl of his emotional and memorable experience after his dad's death when his gurney was draped in a special quilt, and the staff accompanied him out the front door. Colleen Guilfoile, Community and Volunteer Services Coordinator, contacted the "Stitch and Knit" group at Trinity Lutheran in Lindstrom about the quilt, and they decided to take on the project. Presented to Parmly in September, 2006, the quilt offers a dignified departure from the nursing home after a resident's death. Wrapped in the beautiful quilt, the resident now leaves through the front door with same dignity as when they arrived. In appreciation of the respect shown to Winsome Hawkinson as the first resident to be honored with the quilt, a member of her family created a quilt holder so it can be displayed in the chapel.
