Proper disposal on Flag Day
In honor of Flag Day, June 14, the Harris American Legion properly disposed of more than 200 American flags at a formal ceremony in Harris.
The Legion collects old and weathered flags from people in the community and about every other year they hold a ceremony to properly dispose of them. Ralph Carlson said they had so many flags this year they had to extend the disposal into the next day.
On Aug. 3, 1949, President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14 of each year as National Flag Day.
"This is the proper way to dispose of a flag," Tom Janssen said. "A lot of blood was shed for it."
