Rush City's Bulrush Golf Course has a bit of European flair to help its golfers improve their game.

The Oliver Darby School of Golf, new to the course this year, is at the Bulrush Tuesdays and Wednesdays and offers a variety of services to patrons of the course.

Run by PGA Professional Oliver Darby, the school offers individual and private lessons, juniors academy, a quick-fix fifteen, on-course playing lessons and ladies2golf session.

After moving from England to Minnesota, Darby settled down with his wife in Andover and opened his own golf teaching business. Darby shares his time between Woodland Creek Golf Course in Andover and Bulrush in Rush City.

The entrepreneur with a thick England accent wants to help people enjoy the game of golf by helping them improve their game in a non-stressful way. Golf can be a frustrating game and Darby wants to intervene before people quit.

During a typical lesson Darby will have the golfer start with a warm-up so he can exam his or her swing. He aims to keep each lesson as uncomplicated as possible.

"I let the player hit some shots, that way I can get a fair reflection of what they do," he said. "When their game gets better, people enjoy it more. Everyone can benefit from a lesson."

At 31, Darby has lots of experience to draw upon to help people develop and advance their game to the next level.

He played division I golf at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga on a golf scholarship for two years before he turned pro. He graduated from the National Training Academy in Belfry, England in 2002. Following his graduation he was invited by the PGA to discuss with them the development of their training program.

In 2003, Darby moved to the Royal Jersey Golf Club and worked alongside the Head Professional in serving the needs of the members. Darby also assisted the coaching of the Royal Jersey ladies teams in preparation for their annual matches.

For Darby, he just wants to make a difference in people's golf game.

"Everyone has a unique swing. I am driven to instill sound fundamentals in all players and to help them understand how their swing works."
