Remitz, the Bass fishing rock star
By Steve Morris
On March 11, North Branch native Derek Remitz won his first ever professional bass fishing tournament.
The rookie, who recently moved from Texas to Alabama, beat out some of the top bass fishing professionals in the country in an Bassmaster Elite Series event in Del Rio, Texas.
Winning the tournament netted the 24-year-old a cool $100,000 cash prize.
His mother Judy Remitz, along with family, was on hand to watch him take first place. Judy Remitz said after he won, it was like he was a rock star. He was signing autographs, taking pictures and doing interviews with many different media outlets. Judy Remitz said more than 3,000 people were on hand to watch the final weigh in. In the end, Derek Remitz beat everyone by seven pounds.
"People in southern Texas take fishing very seriously," his mother said.
Derek Remitz didn't take much time off. He is Stockton, California, preparing for his next fishing tournament.
