Pierz defeats Tigers in first round of sections
By Steve Morris
It's officially the offseason for the Rush City girls basketball team.
The Tigers were defeated in the subsection 6AA quarterfinals by the Pierz Pioneers 72-38 on Feb. 27. It was the first match up between the two teams this season.
Senior Bethany Peters led the team in her last varsity game, finishing with a double double. She ended with a team high in points and rebounds, collecting 11 rebounds and scoring 13 points.
Her partner in crime, Amber Hoffman, ended 10 points and six rebounds.
Rush City did outrebounded Pierz 41-30.
The Tigers were hamstrung by turnovers, committing 23 for the game, compared to 10 by the Pioneers.
The Pioneers shot the lights out against the Tigers, shooting 51 percent from the floor.
"Pierz shot pretty well against us -- you will win a lot of games shooting 51 percent," head coach Jeremy Albright said.
After beating Rush City, Pierz beat East Central 40-32 on March 3. Pierz played Braham in the section finals March 6.
The Tigers finished the season 1-22 overall and 1-13 in the Great River Conference.
"Just like we have for the whole second half of the season, we worked hard. I am proud of the girls for not giving up and not quitting against Pierz," Albright said.
