NB girls golf place 5th at Purple Hawk Invite

The Vikings girls golf team came in fifth place at the Purple Hawk Invite April 23.

"It seems the combination of a stiff NW breeze and the soggy conditions on the course made The Hawk tough to play," head coach Dave Ambers said.

Viking Amy Aho's 95 earned her a sixth place medal she was ninth in the 2006 event and Wildcat Krista Liebsch was 10th with a 100. Blair Bonner of St. Paul Highland Park and Alex DeBoer of Spring Lake Park carded the lowest scores with 86. DeBoer took the first place medal home as a result of a tie-breaker.

Switching matches, the Viking girls took advantage of good weather and home course advantage to grab two conference wins the last full week in April.

On April 25 the Vikings broke into the win column with a 199-203 win over Chisago Lakes. Amy Aho and Lacee Scherer led their team. Both golfers overcame first-hole, triple bogey eights to share medalist honors with identical 46's.

The heroine-of-the-day award went to Jeni Farr. Golfing in the fourth slot, Farr came in with a season-best 51. Katie Foley recorded a 56, despite finding the out-of-bounds twice and the water once.

A week after the Vikings shot a disappointing 219 in a nine-stroke loss at St. Francis, they rebounded with a season-best score April 12. The team's 193 was good enough to beat St. Francis‚ 194.

Scherer and Aho shared medalist honors. This time, neither girl had a score higher than six as they each pared three holes and totalled 44 strokes.

"Even with those two 44's on the score sheet, the win over the Saints wouldn't have been possible without someone else stepping up. This day, it was Kelsey Johnson who cemented the win a season-best 50," Ambers said.
