It's fishing time

After many months of waiting, the fishing opener has finally arrived. Starting Saturday, people will be able to drop their lines and begin fishing for Walleye, Northerns and Saugers.

Ray Abrizenski, owner of Ray's Live Bait and Guide Service on Rush Lake expects the fish to be biting come Saturday. He said the Walleye should be in around eight to 12 feet of water. Abrizenski said fishing with a slip bobber along with live bait will be the best bet to bring home dinner or a trophy fish.

If you're still having problems catching fish, you can always call the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for advice. Ron Payer, fishery chief for the DNR said they are always willing to help people with fishing needs and questions.

"Walleye fishing looks like it should be pretty good this summer," Payer said. "There's a lot of good fish out there."

If you are planning on fishing on the opener, know the rules and regulations. There are 28 new experimental regulations on individual lakes and streams across the state. Below are just a few of examples of the regulations people fishing should be aware of:

•Transplanting aquatic plants, placing exotic species, applying chemicals and some types of cutting to control vegetation in any public waters requires a permit.

•Dragging boat anchors or other weights with a motor-propelled boat through aquatic vegetation is unlawful.

• Depositing fish entrails or fish parts into public waters or onto lake or stream shores is prohibited.
