Lloyd M. Johnson
Lloyd Martin Johnson, the son of J. Albert and Hattie (Nelson) Johnson, was born December 27, 1925 at Askov, Minn. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Askov, where he is currently a member.
Lloyd attended school at Askov and Austin, Minn., leaving high school in 1943 to enlist in the United States Navy. During World War II he served aboard LCT's in the Pacific and was honorably discharged from the military in 1946. Lloyd was very patriotic and loved serving in the Navy.
On January 18, 1948, Lloyd was united in marriage to Joy Opal Pedersen. To this union three children were born: Pam, Debe, and Perry.
Lloyd grew up working in a grocery store in Askov, the Johnson Market, that was started by his grandparents, Martin and Mary Johnson. He enjoyed sales so much it became his life's profession, later working for Bank-O-Medic Insurance Company and Lutheran Brotherhood as a sales representative in Superior, Wis. Even after his retirement he continued to work at True Value and Ace Hardware stores in Cambridge, Minn.
He loved to ‘tinker' with woodworking projects and model trains, and his lawn was his pride and joy. He loved people and once brought home stranded motorists from the local gas station to share a meal with his family. He was a member for many years of the American Legion and was proud and honored to serve as Chaplain for Post No. 139 in Harris, Minn.
As Lloyd's health deteriorated and his kidneys began to fail, it was necessary for him to give up many of his favorite foods, such as spaghetti and meatballs, and chocolate. Following unsuccessful kidney dialysis at the University of Minnesota Hospitals, he was moved to Golden LivingCare Center in Rush City, Minn. where he passed away on April 28, 2007, at the age of 81 years.
He is survived by his wife, Joy, of North Branch, Minn.; daughters Pam Olander of Hinckley, Minn. and Debe (Roger) Pearson of Harris; son Perry (Lori) Johnson of Ruskin, Fla.; grandchildren Tina (Steve) Woelber, Nels Olander, Vicki (Galen) Marks, Jeni Olander, Sarah (Jeff) Yonkovich, Scott Johnson, step-grandchildren Bryan, Kryssi, and Katie Hedenstad; great- grandchildren Jacob and Tyler Woelber, Dalton and Nikita Davis, and Dana Marks; sister Jeanette McChesney, Plymouth, Minn.; sisters-in-law LaVerne Johnson of Ham Lake, Minn. and Josephine Johnson of Phoenix, Ariz.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Albert and Hattie Johnson, sisters Alice (Chris) Keller and Myrtes (John) Hopkins, and brothers Robert and Erwin Johnson.
Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday 2 p.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Askov with Rev. Shane Anderson officiating. Music will be provided by Tony and Kirsten Ecklund and Arla Budd. Honorary casket bearers will be the Harris American Legion Post # 139 and the active casket bearers will be Galen Marks, Steve Woelber, Nels Olander, Jeff Johnson, Bryan Hedenstad and Scott Johnson. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Funeral and Cremation Service of Rush City - Olson Chapel.
