Carlos bridge partly closed for repairs

The eastbound lane on the County Road 36 bridge in Carlos Avery Wildlife Area has been closed for repair expected to be done this fall.

Drivers along County Road 36, which runs east - west between Stacy and Wyoming, may notice a series of barricades in the eastbound lane. The lane is closed until further notice because of a rotted timber "piling cap."

According to Chisago County Engineer Bill Malin, it is believed that water damage at some point in the past has caused the cap to rot along its southern edge, and is now compressed underneath the eastbound lane.

The bridge itself, a timber bridge, crosses a wetland area and is supported by timber pilings driven into the mud. The piling cap is a horizontal structure that sits atop the pilings and supports the bridge deck.

Malin stated that the problem is isolated to the southern side of the bridge, and that the cap underneath the westbound lane is in excellent condition. He expects the bridge to be repaired yet this fall.

A repair will entail lifting the bridge deck, sliding out the existing piling cap, and replacing it. Malin expects the repair will take about three days.
