The North Branch cross country team ran at the annual Swain Invitational on the Enger Park Golf Course in Duluth Oct. 6.
With wet and windy conditions, the girls team placed a respectable 7th place out 26 teams. The girls finished with 207 points, 12 points behind section foe Duluth East. Forest Lake, also in their section, took 5th place.
The Swain meet results were encouraging for head coach Brian Hasleiet.
"Things are looking good for us for our conference and section meet at the end of the year," he said.
The girls are keeping an eye on the top section teams as they hope to qualify for the state tournament. The top two teams from each section earn a spot at the state meet.
For the girls race, there were a total of 171 girl finishers. North Branch sophomore Miranda Charley claimed 20th place in a time of 17:05.
The boys team ran well for the day, considering they had some of their runners in age group brackets.
As a team, they took 14th place out of 27 teams with 355 points.
Mike Heidelberger and Ryan Norman cracked the top 35 in a competitive field of runners.
"The course is very demanding and our kids really stepped up and responded very well," Hasleiet said. "Heidelberger and Norman once again had excellent finishes ..."
Preconference meet
For their last home meet of the year, the boys and girls ran at home for the preconference meet with Chisago Lakes at the North Branch Golf Course on a Oct. 9. Both the boys and the girls defeated the Wildcats in the duo.
Ali Zimmerman was the first girl to finish with a time of 16:06 which was more than a minute faster than her time at Swain.
Norman and Heidelberger battled it out all the way to the finish line. Norman edged his teammate by less than a second.
"All of our kids ran very relaxed and focused races tonight. I'm really excited about our conditioning and the overall health of our team going into the most important part of our season. The conference meet next week and the Section Meet the week after are why we've been working so hard all year and I really think our kids are in great shape to show what they can do in the next two weeks," Hasleiet said.
