Tennis battles conference rivals

The North Branch tennis team earned its first win of the season 4-3 against Columbia Heights on Aug. 30.
The team swept the doubles points with Mandy Johnson and Katie Wicklund winning at No. 1 doubles 6-2, 6-1. Second doubles Crystal Miller and Catie Bettendorf won 6-1, 6-0. No. 3 doubles Bailey Milligan and Jessica Klow won 6-2, 7-5. Quiana Quam earned her first varsity victory at No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-2.
No. 2 singles Sarah Byrne lost a heart breaker of a match 6-7 (6-8), 6-7 (5-7) losing both tiebreakers.
Head coach Tom McLaughlin said it was as close a match as he has ever seen.
No. 1 Sara Fletcher and No. 4 single Emily Byrne both lost 3-6, 3-6.
Up next, the girls play Blaine on Sept. 15.
