TO THE EDITOR:

As I sit and listen to final scores at night, wishing the Twins were in some sort of playoff hunt, I think back to the summer baseball seasons that were played in North Branch this summer.

Summer recreation and traveling programs from 10-and-under through 15-and-under had their ball games in the surrounding areas, but so did two other teams: the North Branch VFW, and North Branch American Legion sponsored baseball programs.

Where I grew up, these two programs were what I looked forward to playing. With baseball at its finest, in the heat of the summer, playing doubleheaders, and playing with friends building relationships and skills.

A lot of support was given to each of these programs, and they deserve every bit of acknowledgement.

The local VFW Post #6424 under the command of Pat Tallarico allowed us to join the State sponsored activity. This was the first year of this program and will hopefully continue for years to come.

American Legion Post #85 in North Branch was a major contributor in the success of the summer baseball program by then Commander Orv Otterness, other cabinet members, and Legion members.

The community also showed their importance in the success of our VFW baseball team as Dairy Queen, Jim Jorgenson, et al; and Jerry and Matt McConnell of Pizza Pub in North Branch. Their graciousness allowed our newly formed program to defray costs for league fees and help to purchase uniforms that will be able to be used in the years to come.

I can't help but think that these types of summer programs would not be around if not for the help of the members of the community, businesses, and Veteran groups like the VFW and American Legion. Credit should also be given to the coaches, parents, and athletes that help run these programs on a day-to-day basis, giving these opportunities to the youth of our communities.
