Howard McCabe
Howard L. McCabe, age 90, of Holland, Iowa, formerly of the Burr Oak area, passed away Sunday, December 23, 2007 at the Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.
Howard was born November 9, 1917 in Winneshiek County to Eugene and Ada (Pierce) McCabe. He attended school in Bluffton. On January 6, 1947 he married Ginger "Eunice" Adams in Missouri. He was an iron worker for several years and worked all around the country for American Bridge and Bethlehem Steel. For 30 years they operated McCabe's Tavern in Stark, Minnesota before retiring to Pine City in 1982. They moved to Holland, Iowa, in 1994 where they have resided since. He enjoyed his family, working with his hands, telling stories, making people laugh, and garage sales. He was a 61 year member of the Ironworker's Union Local 563.
Howard is survived by his wife Ginger of Holland; eight children Tootsie (Roy) Hesse of Stacy, Minn., Dixie Oberg of Roanoke, Virginia, Pauline Mittelstaedt of Mora, Minn., Lynette (Scott) Larson of Cannon Falls, Minn., Gene (Amy) McCabe of Blaine, Wash., Jerome (Carol) McCabe of Albany, Georgia, Karen (Ronald) Hageman of Burr Oak, Iowa, and Nancy (Richard) White of Decorah; 36 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother; three sisters; and two grandchildren.
Funeral Mass was 11 a.m. Friday, December 28, 2007 at the Assumption Catholic Church in Canton, Minn., with Father Donald P. Schmitz officiating. Burial was in the St. Agnes Cemetery at Plymouth Rock in rural Cresco, Iowa. Visitation was 5 - 7 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2007 at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel with a prayer service at 6 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church.
