Airborne, vehicle crashes into school bus; students OK
A vehicle that lost control and became airborne struck near the top of a school bus carrying about 37 students just after 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3 in South Chisago Lakes Township.
One of the students on board, an 8-year-old boy, received a contusion on his head and was released to his mother at the scene. The bus driver was transported to St. Croix Valley Regional Medical Center with minor injuries, said Sgt. Kris Scott of the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office in a press release.
According to the press release:
The crash occurred when a Ford Explorer, driven by 71-year-old Thomas John Nielson, of Lindstrom, was traveling north on Morgan Avenue and crossed into the west ditch. While the school bus was stopped at the stop sign on Nathan Lane to enter onto Morgan, the Nielson car then hit the upslope of the ditch to Nathan Lane and became airborne.
The man’s vehicle struck the school bus near the top of the bi-fold door on the right front corner of the bus. Nielson received non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Fairview Lakes Medical Center in Wyoming.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the cause of the crash.
