An illuminating experience

(slideshow) Wild River State Park near Amelund hosted a winter hike the evening of Jan. 14, which attracted an array of visitors who traversed over two miles of paths lit by luminaries. As a break from the cold, hikers warmed their bodies by a massive bonfire and huddled inside the park’s visitor center, drinking cider and nibbling on cookies. Guitar and fiddle music reverberated through the confines of the visitor center. Park Naturalist Kacie Carlson said the event was originally scheduled as a cross-county ski and snowshoe outing with seven miles of lit trails, but the lack of snow lead to park officials changing the format. About 600 people participated in the hike. Photos by Derrick Knutson
