After losing to the Novas 8-1 last Thursday, the Viking boys hockey team put up a fight but fell 13-5 to the Rebels last Saturday.
Zach Fairbanks scored the only North Branch goal off an assist by Brandon Timm against Minneapolis Coop (Edison/Roosevelt/South/North/Patrick Henry/Southwest/Washburn/Minnesota Transitions Charter). Vikings goalie Kolton Kiester stopped 30 of 38 shots.
At Moose Lake, the team was down 0-5 before going on a scoring run in the second period. Goals by Fairbanks (assist by Cole Lee), Joey Courtright (assist by Ryan Zentner), along with two by Connor Martineau (assists by Timm and Zentner) made the score 4-7 at the end of the period. An unassisted goal by Mitch Patten at the beginning of the third period got the team within two, but the Rebels rallied back to out-score and defeat the Vikings 13-5.
Goalie Donovan Steffen stopped 21 of the 34 shots on the Vikings goal.
The North Branch boys hockey team has a 2-5 Two Rivers Conference and 4-13-1 overall record. The Vikings will host the St. Francis Fighting Saints (5-13-2) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, before hosting the 9-12 Irondale Knights at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7.
