By Victoria Dahlin—
Vikings freshman wrestler Cameron Sampson qualified for the Ninth Grade and Under Wrestling League (NGUWL) State Individual Tournament by placing in the top two in the 132 pound weight class in the Region 5 Individuals last Saturday at Chisago Lakes Area High School.
The North Branch (NGUWL) team took sixth place out of 13 teams with 113 points ahead of Irondale with 111 points and behind Forest Lake with 157.5 points. Maple Grove won the tournament with 284.5 total team points.
“Congratulations to the North Branch Ninth Grade and Under Wrestling League team,” said Coach Tony Aho. “This was the first year that we have competed in the league, and although we still need to find a way to recruit wrestlers to fill all of the weight classes, the weights we did fill were covered with quality, competitive wrestlers. We are very proud of the North Branch ninth grade team and its coaches Brian Robelia and Justin Pinna. Also thanks to the managers and parents who made our debut season a great success. Special congratulations goes to Cameron Sampson.”
Sampson will be competing in the NGUWL State Individual Tournament beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4 at Champlin Park High School.
