NB girls hoops add to win column

The North Branch girls basketball team picked up two wins last week when it first hosted Princeton and then traveled to Columbia Heights.

First up against the Tigers, the Vikings played a complete game to take control and come away with a 55-36 victory.

“I think we did a lot of things better tonight that we have been working hard in practice to do,” said Coach Dan Schindler. “Our ball reversal on offense was better, and we did a nice job of running our offense until we found the open person. We had great balance in scoring led by Kallie Grote. We were only a basket away from having four girls in double figures, and I really like it when we can get that balance scoring.

“Our defense was solid all night. I was worried about their quickness, but we played great transition basketball. Haley Huset did a great job on both ends of the court. It was an important win for us as Princeton is now in our section for tournament play,” added Schindler.

Next the Vikings picked up a 52-29 conference win over the Hylanders last Friday.

“Columbia Heights is one of the teams we only play once in the conference so it took us a little while to adjust to their team,” Coach Schindler explained. “I thought we started the game a little sluggish and missed too many easy shots. I thought Annette Olson really picked it up for us and scored 10 first half points to get us going. Cassedy Coleman continues to shine for us on the defensive end. Eighth grader Courtney Selbitschka also did a nice job for us with five steals and four assists.

“We were able to pick up our game in the second half and get the win. I like that it’s different people for us every night that can step up and help our team. We have a very tough schedule left and will need everyone to continue to play good basketball,” noted Schindler.

The North Branch girls basketball team is seventh in the North Suburban Conference with a 4-6 conference and 12-7 overall record.
