Vikings beat down by Hylanders

With the defeat by Columbia Heights 64-35 in its only game last week, the North Branch boys basketball team extended its losing streak to 11.

“Columbia Heights has a very good squad, and their quickness on the perimeter and athleticism inside gave us trouble tonight,” said Coach David Anderson. ”When we play teams like Columbia Heights we have to execute exceptionally well and get off to a great start. Tonight we spotted them a nine point lead to start the game, and we quickly dug ourselves a deep hole. Our guys fought hard and played much better and looser in the second half of the game.

“Aaron Biederman played big for us off the bench, and Tom Kinsella showed his leadership by playing lock down defense in the second half. During tough stretches like the one we are in, it’s very important for a team to not let the losses get them down, but instead look for something to build on each game. Our guys have been doing a good job of finding what we can build on and work extremely hard to get better every day in practice. We have had some of our younger guys like Brandon Thauwald and Travis Van Elsberg step up and take on leadership roles along with our two seniors Tyler and Tom. Those are the types of things a team like this needs to help it grow and improve each week,” Anderson explained.

The North Branch boys basketball team is 11th in the North Suburban Conference with a 0-9 conference and 2-15 overall record. The Vikings will travel to Irondale High School in New Brighton to face the Knights at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, before hosting the Cloquet Lumberjacks at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11. The team will then host the St. Francis Fighting Saints at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14.
