NB girls aim to step up game in playoffs

By Victoria Dahlin—

Last week the Viking girls basketball team split its last two games of the regular season.

On Feb. 21 the team hosted Fridley, got out to a fast start and defeated the Tigers 56-49.

“It was a nice win as they beat us the first time around in Fridley,” said Coach Dan Schindler. “I thought we played a very good first half. Haley Huset played her best offensive game of the season scoring 14 first half points. Haley was really attacking the basket and was able to break down the defense. Not only was she scoring but able to break down the Fridley defense and open up her teammates.

“Kallie Grote also played a nice game and was hitting her outside shots scoring 10 first half points. Sarah Lekson continues to play well. We struggled a little bit offensively the second half, but did enough to hold on for the win,” Schindler noted.

Last Friday the Vikings traveled and lost to the #8 state-ranked Chisago Lakes Area Wildcats 58-38 in its last game of the regular season.

“Our kids played hard, but we never got into a rhythm in the game because we couldn’t score enough,” said Coach Schindler. “Sarah Lekson played with a lot of pain for us as she has some very sore ribs. Sarah really tried to toughen it out for us, but she just couldn’t move as good as she normally does. We just hope she can heal fast and be ready for the tournament this Wednesday. We like our draw in the tournament and now everyone is back to 0-0. We are hoping that all our players step up their game, and we can have some fun in the tournament.”

The North Branch girls basketball team ended its regular season seventh in the North Suburban Conference with a 6-10 conference and 15-11 overall record. The #3 section seeded Vikings will host the #6 seeded Duluth Denfeld Hunters in the Section 7AAA quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29. The winner will compete against the winner of the #2 Grand Rapids and #7 Cloquet game in the section semifinals at the home of the high seed at 7 p.m. Friday, March 2. The Section 7AAA Championship game will take place at Duluth Denfeld High School at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 8.
