RC track teams tops at Ogilvie, approach school records

By Victoria Dahlin

Both the girls and boys Tiger track teams took first place at the Ogilvie Unlimited Tuesday, April 3.

The boys team totaled 136 points to place ahead of Pine City with 95.5 points, Ogilvie with 56.5, Braham with 49 and Aitkin with 29 total team points.

Winning events were Daniel Weber (110m hurdles, 300m hurdles), Johnathan Mielke (shot put, discus throw), Daniel Taylor (1600m, 3200m), Luke Maher (pole vault), 4x800m relay (Kevin Nelson, Garrett Larson, Kyle Nelson, Isaac Johnson), 4x100m relay (Collin Franklin, Hunter Leigland, Joe Halbert, Matt Mallinger), 4x400m relay(Taylor, Leigland, Weber, Johnson).

“We have some strong performances, but more mistakes that need to be addressed as the meets go by,” said Coach Mike Vaughan. “Johnathan Mielke is approaching the school record in the discus that is held by his father. He has to improve six more feet, and I am quite sure this will happen in the upcoming meets. His distance of 146’ 2” puts him among the top in Minnesota.”

The girls racked up 153 team points to place ahead of Mille Lacs (Onamia/Isle) with 141 points, Pine City with 78, Ogilvie with 76, Braham with 65 and Aitkin with 39 total team points.

Earning first places were Morgan Twingstrom (100m hurdles), Keanna Beleau (100m, 200m), Kayla Nelson (400m), Alecia Meier (triple jump), 4x800m relay (Ashley Swanson, Alissa Mell, Sammi Oscarson, Payton Ramberg), 4x200m relay (Bailey Murawski, Kristy Carlson, Brooke Hein, Kayla Nelson), 4x400m relay (Swanson, Oscarson, Hein, Murawski).

“Like the boys some mistakes were made on the girls side, but we have a tremendous amount of speed to make up for some of the mistakes,” said Coach Vaughan. “Like Jonathan, Kayla Nelson is approaching the school record in the 400 held by Paula Behrendt. With those kinds of times this early in the season she should progress as one of the top 400 runners in the state. Many of the girls showed how strong they are in their respective events, but I think all the girls agree that we need to improve the marks we have made so far this season. I am happy that both teams took first, but I know we have lots of work to do before True Team and the GRC conference meet.”
