RC’s Marissa Belau takes 3rd in State Speech competition
On April 14, the Rush City Speech Team sent 10 members to compete in the Section Speech Meet in Milaca.
Senior students Marissa Belau and Beau Carlson both placed second in their categories, Extemporaneous Reading and Discussion respectively, earning them a trip to the State Speech Meet which was held Friday, April 20, at Chanhassen High School.
Belau and Carlson, who have consistently ranked high at other meets throughout the season, continued this tradition on Friday. Belau took third and, though he did not make the final round, Carlson placed 10th out of 24 speakers.
When asked about his accomplishments this season Carlson said, “It’s my first year in Speech. My only goal was to make it to State and I did that. Tenth is alright with me.”
Belau, who also competed in the State Meet her freshmen year, took 3rd place after making the final round cut.
After the results of her freshmen experience, she thought this was a little ironic. “I placed 3rd when I was in 9th grade also. It was just a weird feeling for me to place 3rd again.”
Belau, who has been in the Extemporaneous Reading category since she joined the team in 8th grade and was one of the team’s captains this year, continued by saying, “It was definitely a great way to finish the season. I feel like I have grown so much as a speaker and as a person. It was nice to end my senior season on a very high note.”
