In its first three conference competitions of the season the Viking girls golf team has cut down on strokes and showed steady improvement.
After scoring 231 the week before, the team carded a total 226 tying for eighth place with Chisago Lakes Area, out of nine teams in the conference meet held at Theodore Wirth Golf Course April 24.
The Vikings placed behind Irondale (178), St. Louis Park (183), Benilde-St. Margaret’s (190), Spring Lake Park (191), St. Francis (191), Totino-Grace (201) and Fridley (222).
Senior Lauren Ibinger came in with 53, after opening the season with a 57.
Sophomore Emily Carlson continued her improvement with a 57, after scoring 61 in the first meet, tying with freshman Janice Elkerton.
Junior Emily Lawrence carded 59, while Sarah Harris ended with 65 and Hannah Gomes 70.
“The course was in typical early season condition, unlike the North Branch Golf Course where we opened the season a week earlier,” said Coach Dave Ambers. “Despite that, the girls cut a few strokes.”
The girls golf team improved even more when it scored 219 and took seventh at the conference meet at Majestic Oaks Golf Course last Thursday.
The team placed ahead of Fridley (222) and Chisago Lakes Area (232); and behind Irondale (190), Benilde-St. Margaret’s (191), St. Francis (194), Spring Lake Park (195), St. Louis Park (202) and Totino-Grace with (203).
Ibinger carded 49, Carlson 55, Elkerton 57, Lawrence 58, Maddie Alden 66 and Gomes 67.
“The course was in better shape than Wirth and the girls took advantage of the conditions to improve our team score,” said Coach Ambers. “They cut their score by seven more strokes, from 226 at Wirth to 219. I hope that means we’re making progress. It was great to see that Lauren’s card totaled less than 50. That should give her some more confidence and help her reach her potential. And, once again, Emily Carlson continues to improve her game.”
The North Branch girls golf team will compete in a conference meet at Victory Links Golf Course in Blaine beginning at 1:45 p.m. with the Viking team scheduled to start at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 2 before competing in a conference meet at Ponds Golf Course in St. Francis at 3 p.m. with a shotgun start Tuesday, May 8.
