Recovery program to help veterans, families with addictive behaviors
Greg Hunt, Isanti County News—
A new program to help East Central area veterans and their families has been initiated in Cambridge using the SMART Recovery model.
As explained on the program’s website: “The SMART Recovery 4-Point Program® helps people recover from all types of addiction and addictive behaviors, including: drug abuse, drug addiction, substance abuse, alcohol abuse, gambling addiction, cocaine addiction, prescription drug abuse, and problem addiction to other substances and activities. SMART Recovery sponsors face-to-face meetings around the world, and daily online meetings. In addition, the online message board and 24/7 chat room are excellent forums to learn about SMART Recovery and obtain addiction recovery support.”
Small group meetings with a trained facilitator take place every Thursday at Cambridge Lutheran Church’s Archive Room from 10-11:30 a.m. At present, the local group is focussed on working with veterans and their families on the unique stresses and struggles associated with Armed Forces deployments.
Topics covered in a typical SMART Recovery meeting center on dealing with backsliding, relapse prevention through understanding triggers to addictive behaviors, and taking forward steps to recovery through positive behavior changes.
Participants are encouraged to “build their own tool box” to recovery by learning strategies which best fit best a particular situation. Self-development and achieving balance in life are goals for all participants.
