Viking girls win, boys take second at Wildcat track meet

By Victoria Dahlin

It was a beautiful day for a track meet last Wednesday when the Vikings boys and girls track teams competed at Chisago Lakes Area High School with the boys placing second and the girls taking first.

The boys totaled up 105 points to win over Math & Science Academy (30) and Columbia Heights (22) and behind Chisago Lakes Area (114).

Taking firsts for the team were the 4×200 relay (Tony Denn, Rance Ashley, Tyler Knobbe, Cade Chouinard), Austin Wek (300m hurdles), Blake Degerstrom (triple jump), Brandon Thauwald (high jump) and Seth Eastwood (shot put).

“Once again, the boys continue to improve in all events,” said Coach Norm Nagel. “Their hard work paid off. Again, the hurdlers showed their strength by taking multiple places. Aaron Senne and Connor Utschinski each had a personal best in the pole vault jumping 10’0 and 9’6, respectively. Seth Eastwood had a personal best in the shot put by throwing 47-04. Our horizontal jumps were very strong. Leading the way in the triple jump was Blake Degerstrom with a jump of 39-04 and in long jump, placing second was Sam Peltier, third, Rance Ashley, and fourth Tyler Knobbe. Overall, it was a productive meet for us since it was our only one this week.”

The Viking girls racked up 155 points to win ahead of Chisago Lakes Area (131), Forest Lake (98) and Math & Science Academy (34).

Finishing first for the girls were the girls 4×200 relay ( Madison Kunshier, Sheralynn Linkert, Rebecca Ramberg, Cassie Kunshier), the 4×400 relay (Haley Huset, Courtney White, Kadie Mattson, C. Kunshier), Linkert (100m hurdles, 300m hurdles), M. Kunshier (200m dash, 400m dash), Huset (800m run), Kassandra Salo (pole vault) and Becky Ramberg (triple jump).

“The girls are becoming very strong,” said Coach Nagel. “Seventh grader, Rhianna Rinke had a personal best in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:24.45. Also having a personal best, in the long jump was Mikayla Hensch with a jump of 14-06.50. Sibling rivals Maddie Kunshier and Cassie Kunshier, went head-to-head in the 400 meter dash with Maddie coming out on top with a time of 1:01.81 and Cassie taking second with 1:04.64. This will be a race for the next three years since Maddie is a freshman and Cassie, an eighth grader. Overall, I am very pleased with all of the performances that day. We are setting our goals very high for the True Team meet in Grand Rapids. If everything falls into place and we have some nice surprises, I believe we have a shot at winning True Team”
