The North Branch girls golf team on May 8 took seventh place with a score of 216, ahead of Fridley (221) and Chisago Lakes Area (251), and behind Irondale (186), Benilde-St. Margaret’s (196), St. Francis (188), Spring Lake Park (198), St. Louis Park (191) and Totino-Grace (210) in the conference meet held at Ponds Golf Course in St Francis.
Lauren Ibinger carded 51, Janice Elkerton 53, Sarah Harris (55), Emily Carlson 57, Emily Lawrence 57, and Hannah Gomes (58).
“The meteorologists predicted scattered light showers as the NSC girls teed off at the usually soggy fairways at The Ponds in St. Francis,” said Coach Dave Ambers “Soon, soggy turned to soaked. The clouds moved in, the wind came up, the rain started falling and increased in intensity. And all that fun was followed by a generous covering of hail. Meanwhile, the golfers did their best to concentrate on the task at hand as they completed their nine holes. By the time we were adding up the scores, it was calm, sunny and warm.
“Most of the teams had 15 to 20 more strokes than they totaled at our last meet, which was played in almost ideal weather conditions. We were only two strokes higher. I was proud of the way our girls continued to do their best, despite the conditions. They were wet, cold and anxious to be finished. Regardless of the conditions, they struggled through and came in with a respectable team score on a very difficult golf course.”
The North Branch girls golf team will compete in the North Suburban Conference Tournament at TPC Twin Cities Golf Course in Blaine at 8 a.m. (shotgun start) Monday, May 21.
