Despite dismal weather conditions, Vikings track teams competed strong at the Section True Team Meet with the boys placing fifth and the girls third last week in Grand Rapids.

The boys team accumulated 394 points to place ahead of Cloquet, Proctor, Pine City, Hibbing and Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin and behind Chisago Lakes Area, Grand Rapids, Mora and Hermantown.

“Austin Wek had a great performance taking first in the 110 hurdles, and in the 300 hurdles he took sixth,” said Coach Norm Nagel. “Seth Eastwood was a double winner (third) in the shot put and discus tossing the shot 46-9 and the discus, 121-2. Matthew Marrin had a stellar day in the 100 and 200 meter dash, having personal best performances in both. Carl Neumann shared first place in the pole vault with a 13-6 jump.”

The girls team earned 478.5 points to place ahead of International Falls, Chisago Lakes, Mora, Cloquet, Proctor, Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin), Pine City and Hibbing and behind Grand Rapids and Hermantown.

“A strong performance from the girls,” said Coach Nagel. “They missed second place by 1.5 points. The strong events were the 4×100 meter relay (taking first were Rebecca Ramberg, Mikayla Johnson, Mikayla Hensch and Cassie Kunshier) and 4×200 relay (taking first were Maddie Kunshier, Rebecca Ramberg, Sherahlynn Linkert and Cassie Kunshier). It was nice to see great performances by these relays since Ramberg is the only senior. Kunshier also took first in the 400m dash.

Despite poor weather conditions Kassie Salo took first place in pole vault with a 9’6” jump in last week’s Section True Team Meet.

“Rhianna Rinke ran a personal best in the 3200 meter run (second) with a time of 11:38.81, beating her old mark of 11:58. Also, Sherahlynn Linkert was strong in both hurdle races (third in 100m and second in 300m) competing against tough competition. Kassie Salo took first place in pole vault with a 9’6” jump.”

The North Branch track and field teams will compete in the North Suburban Conference Championship Finals at Irondale High School in New Brighton at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 17.
