North Branch girls track and field team member Madison Kunshier (freshman) took Champion in the 400m dash at the Section 7AA Championships in Princeton Saturday, June 2 to qualify for the Minnesota State High School State Track and Field Championships. Also medaling and earning points for the girls team were Kassie Salo (senior) and Mikalya Johnson (eighth grade) tying for third in the pole vault, Hayley Huset (sophomore) fourth in 800m run, Rhianna Rinke (seventh grade) fourth in 1600m run and the 4x400m relay team with members Kunshier, Cassidae Kunshier (eighth grade), Kadie Mattson (sophomore), Huset and M. Kunshier. Earning points for the team were Sheralynn Linkert with seventh in the 300m high hurdles, the 4x100m relay team with members Becky Ramberg (senior), Mikayla Hensch (junior), C. Kunshier and Johnson with eighth as well as the 4x200m relay team with members M. Kunshier, C. Kunshier, Ramberg and Mattson finishing eighth. Carl Neumann was the only viking boy team member took third in the pole vault and was the only Viking boy team member to earn a medal, while Brandon Thauwald took eighth in the high jump to earn points for the team. Only the top two finishers in each event or any athlete meeting that events state standard qualifying time, height or distance qualify to advance to the State Championships. The girls team tallied up 42 points to come in ninth place ahead of Princeton, Zimmerman, Big Lake, Hermantown, Cloquet and Hibbing, while behind Elk River, Forest Lake, Grand Rapids, Andover, Duluth East, St. Francis, Chisago Lakes Area and Cambridge-Isanti. The boys team finished 14th out of 16 teams ahead of Cloquet and Princeton. Andover was the Section Champion, while Forest Lake was Runner-up. M. Kunshier will be running in the State Champion preliminaries at Hamline University in St. Paul at 11:16 a.m. Friday, June 8. If she qualifies she will run in the 400m dash finals at 11:35 Saturday, June 9.
