NB golf concludes with Houle one stroke from state

Four Viking boy golfers qualified for the second round in the Section 7AAA Championship preliminaries May 28 at Grand National Golf Course.

Advancing were senior Jared Houle who carded a 79 (38/41); eighth grader Nick Kress, 80 (39/41); senior Joe Fairbanks, 81 (39/42); and senior Mitch Barg, 81 (41/40). Meanwhile, sophomore John Bubloltz scored an 84 (43/41) and freshman Regan Nelson, an 86 (43/43), to end their seasons.

The season ended for the North Branch golfers in the second round of sections on Thursday when Houle carded a 153 (79/74) to tie for eighth place and just miss qualifying for state by one stroke. Kress scored a 156 (80/76) to place 14th; Fairbanks, 158 (81/77) to tie for 18th; and Barg, a 163 (81/82) to tie for 39th place.

“They all played exceptional rounds in the section,” said Coach Tom Moriarty. “I’m very proud of their play.”

The team finished in eighth place ahead of St. Michael-Albertville, Duluth East, Chisago Lakes, Cloquet/Esko and Princeton while behind Forest Lake, Cambridge-Isanti, Andover, Elk River, Grand Rapids, St. Francis and Duluth Denfeld.
