A senior girl and a freshman boy from Rush City will be competing at the State High School Golf Championships after qualifying at the 4A Section Championships.
On the girls squad, Taylor Schellbach placed fourth after carding a 100 in the first round at Greenhaven Golf Course on May 30. She advanced to the finals last Friday and scored a 92.
On May 29, Dylan Fessenden came in with a 76 in the first round at Victory Links Golf Course to qualify for the finals last Thursday when he scored an 83 to take fourth place.
Eighth grader Brea LeMon carded a 110 and freshman Sara Johnson, a 133 in the first round to also advance to the finals where LeMon shot a 105 to fall short of advancing further.
Matt Strenke, a senior, finished with a 91 in the first round and advanced to the finals where he scored a 97, but he too missed out on the state tournament.
Competing in the first round and not advancing were sophomore Nick Schmidt, carding a 106; junior Alex Enns, a 126; and senior Conner Berman, a 132.
“Very windy day for (girls) golf,” said Coach Jeremy Albright. “We have been spoiled by the warm weather this spring. I thought the kids handled it well. This was our first look at this course, so our scores were up from what we usually shoot. Congratulations to Taylor Schellbach for making the Class A State Tournament. I know this was a huge goal for her throughout her high school career. I couldn’t be more proud and happy for her. Brea shot a really good round as well. I am looking for big things from her in the future.
“Congratulations to Dylan Fessenden for making the Class A State Tournament. I am so happy and proud of him for this accomplishment, especially since he is only a freshman. Between the first and second rounds, this was the last tournament for seniors Matt Strenke and Conner Bergman. They were a pleasure to coach, and I wish them good luck in the future. Good luck to our Rush City competitors. I am so happy to have them represent Rush City down at State. I know they will do well,” Albright noted.
Only the top five golfers in the section finals qualify for the State Tournament. Schellbach and Fessenden will be competing in the State Golf Championships at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker at a tee time yet to be determined Tuesday, June 12 with the finals held Wednesday, June 13.
