Season ends but not without awards for Vikings baseball
By Victoria Dahlin—
After the season ended for North Branch in the first round of the Section 7AAA playoffs last week, team members received North Suburban Conference awards.
On May 29, the No. 10 section seeded Vikings faced No. 7 seed Chisago Lakes Area and lost 4-3 to the Wildcats in its last game of the season.
In the road game, Cole Mattson had two runs and two hits; Dylan Kraemer, two hits and two RBI; Travis Moreno, one hit and one RBI; Thomas Kinsella, one run; and Kevin Johnson and Brett Klun each had two hits.
Johnson faced 21 batters, allowing three runs and five hits. Blake Jorgenson pitched to four allowing one run and one hit, while Jared Axberg faced two and allowed no runs or hits.
North Branch had three runs, nine hits and three errors, and Chisago Lakes Area had four runs, seven hits and one error.
“We had them where we wanted them, but couldn’t finish,” said Coach Steve Christensen. “Cole had a busy day in right, he made some really nice plays. Kevin pitched great. We made a change, and Jared got some big outs. Unfortunately, we couldn’t hold the tying runner on. We really responded in games at the end of the year. Games were close, and played a few extra innings. At our end of the year meeting, we had some awards go out to the student athletes. I’m happy to see those awards go to student athletes who have worked hard inside the classroom, and on the field.”
Johnson and Klun were named NSC All-Conference, while Michael Naggatz was awarded Honorable Mention. Johnson and Klun also were named team Co-Most Vauable Player. The North Branch baseball team ended the 2012 season with a 5-9 North Suburban Conference and a 7-14 overall record.
